Steve Seabury has got together Mosh Potatoes which is a different kind of cookbook. To say the least.

Artist Proceeds from the sales of the book will be going to the Meals on Wheels Charity.

Jason Michel asked him a couple of questions:

Q1: Where did the idea for this smashing *sic* book originate from? Late night post-rock pub egg & bacon sandwich? A kebab shop playing Sabbath? We need to know!

I got home around 3 AM after a good night of drinking with some friends after a concert. Just as most people coming home drunk at that time, I had the munchies and White Castle was too far away of a walk. The cupboards were bare, I had some Taco Bell Fire Sauce from the night before, a couple of eggs and some other stuff hiding in the back of the Fridge that I probably wouldn’t feed my dog. I said to myself “What would Lemmy Do in this situation?”. The next day the idea of Mosh Potatoes was created.

It was really important to me to benefit the Meals on Wheels Charity. Every band that I spoke to loved the idea. They are a great charity who donates over 1 million meals a day to the senior citizens in this country. There should be more books out there that give to charity. I am glad that I am doing my part to help people out.

Q3: How was the initial response with the idea from the bands?

I think all of the bands were really excited to be part of this. Each band that I spoke to wanted to do it. Everyone has their favorite recipes or family secrets. Plus most of these bands have traveled around the world experiencing food and different cultures that most of us would never get the chance to do. So in this book you have a wide range of kick ass food from around the world!!

Q4: & the general public’s response?

Everyone that I have spoken to loves the book. I think people get a kick out of these recipes and the stories behind each recipe. People who buy the book get to see a different perspective of their favorite artist. I think it’s a cool concept as well.

Q5: I imagine Metal bands being more chili con carne or steak munchers & less tartufo, tiramisu or chicken salad. What was the most surprising recipe you received?

There are so many amazing recipes in this book. Its so hard to narrow it down. I personally love The Dream Theater Meatloaf, the Lamb of God Pasta, the Life of Agony Stuffed Lobster, the Pantera BBQ and the Joey Belladonna of Anthrax’s recipe for Tequila Shrimp is amazing.

If you like baking then you are going to love the Fear Factory, Megadeth and Hatebreed recipes in the book as well. These guys bake some incredible desserts.

Q6: Did any of the bands seem to be completely unexpected “foodie” types? (Don’t know why but I expect Dave Mustaine to be one).

Everyone loves to cook and eat. All of the recipes in the book come from the one member who is the biggest food junkie in the band. Chris Caffery of Trans Siberian Orchestra is a major foodie. He also has a line of gourmet hot sauces that are out of this world. Fucking Amazing!!!

Q7: Did you notice any trends within Metal? Did the “classic” bands go for more traditional fodder & the more extreme go for the more adventurous? Or was it the other way around?

You can see the difference in styles of recipes from the bands that have been around and tour the world to the bands that are maybe on their first tour. The Evile recipe is my personal favorite. They are basically a new band and their recipe shows it. The Skeletonwitch recipe rocks as well.  They tell this story in the book about how they like staying at campsites on tour to save money. Their recipe is something they make on the campfire over some beers.

Then you have recipes from Guns & Roses or some of the other major bands. They are a little more polished, a little more refined with their techniques and ingredients. That’s one of the reasons why I think the book is so unique.

Q8: What’s your favourite Metal food related song – Mine’s “Eat The rich” …?

Q9: & for your next project? Punk pies & Goth guacamole?

LOL. That would be funny.

Q10: What one rock star would you like to share a meal with?

If I could go back into time I would love to share a meal with Jim Morrison. He is a rock God in my eyes. I would eat a bag of mushrooms, twist one up, drink some whiskey and chow down on some great food. It would be a blast just to hear his stories and philosophies about life and music.
